GDF Suez has officially inaugurated the Uch II combined cycle power plant in Pakistan following the start of commercial operation earlier in April.
The 375 MW extension to the existing 551 MW Uch plant will use natural gas from domestic sources and will play an important role in tackling the country’s power generation shortfall.
Uch I and II are both majority-owned by GDF Suez. Energy from the new extension will be sold to the National Transmission and Despatch Company under a 25-year power purchase agreement. Together the two projects account for 11 per cent of installed IPP capacity in Pakistan, and also represent the largest foreign investment in the country’s power sector.
Pakistan’s installed electricity generating capacity is 23 663 MW.
