Toshiba Corporation has been selected to provide the battery for the UK’s first 2 MW lithium-titanate battery based energy storage system (ESS).

Toshiba will supply a 1 MWh SCiB battery to the project, which will start operating in November 2014. The ESS will support grid management as part of a research project led by the University of Sheffield and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The ESS will be connected to the 11 kV grid at a primary substation owned by Western power Distribution in central England. Its ability to overcome intermittent output and frequency fluctuations caused by wind and solar farms, as well as perform peak power buffering, will be assessed.

Toshiba’s SCiB technology is an innovative lithium-titanate based secondary battery system characterised by its long life, fast charging and discharging and ability to operate in a wide range of temperature conditions. Toshiba has already received orders for commercial systems in Italy and Japan, it says.
