The Miller Creek Hydroelectric project is to be supplied with a high voltage generator from Alstom based on Powerformer technology. The contract also includes mini-aggregates and a turbine, for a total contract value of around $4.5 million. The Miller Creek power plant is situated 140 km north of Vancouver, British Colombia, and is owned by Edmonton Power Corp. The high voltage generator will have a rated output of 32.3 MVA, a rated voltage of 25 kV and a speed of 720 rev/min while the turbine is a Pelton unit. The equipment will be supplied jointly from Alstom units in Canada and Sweden.
The Miller Creek generator will be connected directly to a 25 kV substation on the grid. The system is compact, Alstom says, with no step-up transformer or medium voltage switchgear, resulting in higher efficiency. A conventional generator of similar size would have a rated voltage in the region of 13.8 kV.
