RWE Power AG has selected Amec Foster Wheeler to carry out the first stage of a project to replace four coal-fired units at the Niederraussem power plant near Cologne, Germany.
Amec Foster Wheeler will provide limited engineering services to help RWE obtain regulatory permits for the project. The contract could lead to another for the turnkey supply of two 550 MW ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) steam generators for the project, says Amec.
If approved, the new power plant, known as BoAplus, will be designed to achieve an efficiency of more than 45 per cent. "Our ultra-supercritical CFB steam generators at the heart of this project will not only improve the efficiency of the plant but will also result in markedly lower emissions," said Gary Nedelka, Group President of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Global Power Group.
