Alstom is to supply two 220 kV gas insulated switchgear substations for the Ras Laffan power plant in Qatar. The French company has signed a Euro24 million contact with Italian company Enelpower, which is responsible for the power part of the engineering, procurement and construction contract at the site. The end customer, Ras Laffan Power Plant Co, is a joint venture of the US company AES which owns 55 per cent of the project and three local companies, Qatar Petroleum, the Qatar Electricity and Water Corp and the Gulf Investment Corp, each of which holds a 15 per cent stake. Ras Laffan will have a generating capacity of 1500 MW and a desalination plant capable of delivering 180 000 m3 of water a day. Alstom will supply 32 bays as well as digital control systems and auxiliary equipment. The work will be carried out according to a technical specification provided by the local utility Kahrama. Delivery is due in less than a year.
