A consortium led by Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation has signed a contract with the Srinagar-based Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corp for the supply of the electromechanical works for the second stage of the 900 MW Baglihar hydropower scheme. The contract includes the design, delivery, erection and commissioning of all electromechanical equipment for the project. Voith Siemens Hydro’s share consists of three vertical generators with an output of 168 MVA each, excitation systems, bus ducts, 400 kV single phase trans-formers, 400 kV gas insulated switchgear and 400 kV cabling. A second consortium partner, VA Tech Escher Wyss, will supply three Francis turbines equipped with turbine governors, butterfly valves, cooling water systems and drainage and dewatering systems. Balance of plant equipment such as auxiliary systems, illumination, cables and HVAC will be provided by local suppliers, as will erection and commissioning of the plant. Work on stage 1 of the project was begun by the same consortium in January 2000 and is due to be completed in December 2004. The second stage is expected to be completed four years after contract approval.
