The Turkish energy company Karpowership continues to build its fleet of ocean-going power ships. Last year it placed an order for a total of 38 engines of the type MAN 51/60. 18 of the units will be multi-fuel engines, the remaining 20 are gas engines, including the MAN 18V51/60G TS, which its maker says is currently the most powerful gas engine available.

The engines each have a power output of 18.5 – 20.4 MW, and deliveries were due to start late in 2017. Installation and commissioning will take place during 2018.

The engines will be deployed in Karpowership’s fleet. Powerships perform an important function by making large power supplies reliably available, often enabling the promotion of industrial growth by virtue of the speed with which the power unit can be delivered and put into operation.

Karpowership is the only company that operates an entire fleet of powerships. A fleet of 13 of these vessels currently generates more than 2.7 GW of capacity in combination. Further vessels with a power capacity of 5.3 GW are currently under construction.
