Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has received several domestic and international orders for energy storage systems (ESS), it has announced.

The South Korean industrial firm is expanding its footprint in the growing ESS market, which, it says, is expected to jump from a value of $3.9 billion dollars in 2019 to $8.2 billion dollars globally by 2024.

Doosan said in a statement that it has signed an agreement with SK E&S to develop a solar energy-linked ESS solution at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s plant located in Changwon, Gyeongnam province, Korea. The 70 MWh facility will be operational by September 2018, and will be linked with a solar power plant and microgrid operation.

Also in Korea, Doosan has signed a contract to supply an ESS control software and battery system as a package system to BSS, a Korean power equipment firm.

In the USA, Doosan says that its subsidiary, Doosan GridTech, has won a contract from Consumers Energy to implement an ESS at a substation in Kalamazoo, southwest Michigan. This contract follows a major order in 2017 from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to implement a 20 billion won ESS at the Beacon Solar Plant near the Mojave Desert.

“Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction plans to aggressively target the global ESS market and expand our business portfolio by expanding into the ESS-linked solar power plant construction and operation business,” said Doosan Vice President Sungwon Kim.
