EDP Renewables has submitted an application to Scottish Ministers for consent for the Moray Offshore Windfarm (West) project.
The company is seeking to install up to 85 turbines in the outer Moray Firth to create a wind farm capable of generating around 850 MW.
The wind turbines would have a maximum blade tip height of 285 m and would be installed on the Smith Bank, around 23 km from Caithness, north-east Scotland.
Consent for the wind farm would enable EDPR to start construction in early 2022.
The project would lie adjacent to the Moray East offshore wind farm project, which is also being developed by EDPR, and which was awarded a contract for difference (CFD) in 2017.
Moray East gained consent from the Scottish government in 2014 and will comprise around 100 turbines generating 950 MW. It will be built in three phases, with the first due to start operating by 2023.
