RES has started construction on the largest solar farm in the USA to use bifacial solar panels.
The Southern Oak Solar Project in the state of Georgia was developed by Invenergy and will have a capacity of 160 MW. Its use of advanced technology will usher in “a new era of high efficiency solar”, RES said.
“This project offers a real opportunity to become the future of solar technology in the United States,” said Tim Jordan, VP of Construction at RES. “Bifacial modules allow project owners to tackle land area constraints and make the most of resources without installing more plant infrastructure.”
Bifacial solar modules generate power from both sides of the panels, allowing project owners to make better use of available space by capturing additional solar energy within the same footprint. The project will also use single axis tracker technology.
Energy from the solar farm will be sold to Georgia Power through Georgia Power's Renewable Energy Development Initiative (REDI) programme.
The solar farm will be completed in 2019.
