Japanese firms Hitachi Zosen Corporation and Eco Power Co Ltd have established a joint venture to build a 500 MW wind farm off the coast of northeast Japan.

The 50-50 partnership will be called Aomori Nishikita Offshore Wind Power Joint Company and will operate out of Osaka to build the Nishikita offshore wind farm off the coast of Aomori Prefecture.

The wind farm will feature up to 125 wind turbines and will start operating in 2025 at the earliest. It will use wind turbines in the 4 MW-9.5 MW class.

Japan’s offshore wind capacity is expected to grow following the recent introduction of the General Waters Bill, which provides a regulatory framework for wind farm developments in waters off the country’s coast.
