The first of two new 1000 MW coal-fired power plants in Port Dickson, Malaysia, has started commercial operation.
Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd (JEP) says that the ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant reached its commercial operation date (COD) on 21 August, boosting Peninsular Malaysia’s generation capacity to 23 748 MW.
The second 1000 MW USC unit is on track to achieve its COD in December 2019, JEP added. The company is 70 per cent owned by Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). Mitsui & Co. Ltd and The Chugoku Electric Power Co. Ltd each hold 15 per cent of JEP.
The two plants are strategically located and are crucial in reinforcing the security of Peninsular Malaysia’s power supply, JEP added.
TNB operates two other USC power plants – Manjung 4 and Manjung 5 in Lumut, Perak.
