Plans for a 300 MW wind farm off the coast of Sweden have been cancelled following opposition to the project from the country’s military.
The Taggen wind farm was planned for installation 12 km from the coastal town of Solvesborg, and secured a permit in 2012 for 83 turbines with 170 m tip heights.
However the developers, Vattenfall and Wallenstam, wanted to take advantage of technological advances and applied to update the permit so that they could install fewer turbines with greater tip heights.
The Swedish Defence Force objected to the changes because of the proximity of the project to the shooting range at Ravlunda, located about 25k m inland.
Taggen Vindpark chairman Mattias Sjoberg said: “Of course, it is regrettable that we are now forced to put down a major renewable energy project that we, together with Wallenstam, have been developing for over 10 years.
“Now we must focus on taking the lessons learned from Taggen into the next offshore project.”
