EDF Renewables has announced plans to build a 110 MW subsidy-free onshore wind farm in the UK.
The Garn Fach project will be developed in Powys, South Wales, in partnership with 14 local farming families. It is likely to consist of up to twenty-two 5 MW turbines.
Ahead of submitting a planning application for the wind farm at the end of 2020, EDF has been carrying out ecological and other feasibility surveys. It has already submitted a scoping report to the Welsh government and an application to Powys County Council to erect a met mast on site, south of Newtown, to gather accurate wind speed data.
EDF said that the project will help the Welsh government to meet its renewable energy targets. “Onshore wind is now one of the cheapest ways of generating renewable or low carbon energy, and Garn Fach will be developed without the need for public subsidy,” EDF said.
