Norway has announced plans to open two major offshore wind areas for development in 2021.
The Ministry for Petrooleum and Energy says that it will start accepting applications for the Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II development areas at the start of 2021.
The two areas could accommodate up to 4.5 GW of capacity.
Utsira Nord is a 1010 km2 area located off Norway’s west coast near Haugesund. It is suited for floating wind projects, is close to shore and provides opportunities for demonstration and larger projects.
Sørlige Nordsjø II is further off the southern coast of Norway and borders Denmark’s North Sea territory. Electricity generated in the area could be used for export to European markets.
Sørlige Nordsjø II covers an area of 2591 km2 and could accommodate bottom-fixed or floating wind projects.
