Siemens Gamesa has secured a new order from Ibereólica Renovables, a Spanish independent power producer, to supply 110 MW of capacity for the second phase of Cabo Leones III wind park, in Chile. The company will deliver 22 of its SG 5.0-145 wind turbines and will also operate and maintain them for 10 years.
With this order, Siemens Gamesa becomes the preferred supplier for the entire Cabo Leones cluster, which totals 598.8 MW and is located in Chile’s Atacama Desert. This amounts to 1.5 m tons of carbon emissions avoided, the equivalent of growing 24 million trees. The complex will feature a range of technologies with capacities from 2 MW turbines to the latest 4.X platform.
Chile’s National Energy Policy 2050 sets ambitious targets to support the country’s transition to clean energy sources. Already 25% of the country’s installed capacity comes from renewable energy sources, including 9% from wind power.
Siemens Gamesa has steadily made inroads in Chile’s wind energy market. From 2014, when it installed its first wind turbine in the country, the company’s installed capacity has grown to 480 MW. It has secured orders worth 700 MW in just the last 12 months.
The Cabo Leones III farm is scheduled to start operations in June 2021, and delivery of its turbines is to be completed by December this year.
