EDF has created a new subsidiary, NUWARD, to boost the development of its small modular reactor, which is now entering the basic design phase.
In line with its objective to achieve First Nuclear Concrete in 2030 for its reference plant in France, after finalising the conceptual design phase of the project, Nuward now moves to the basic design phase, in which is is being supported by EDF Group and its partners. The Nuward SMR, said to be based on proven PWR technology, is a 340 MWe plant with two reactors each rated at 170 MWe.
EDF’s aim is to become the European leader in SMR technology. Nuward’s conceptual design phase consolidated the SMR’s design architecture. It will now proceed with basic design work to progress design maturity.
In accordance with the French nuclear licencing process, the Design and Safety options file (DOS) is scheduled for submission to the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) in July 2023. Nuward will also engage with the French state’s authorities to assess and select possible sites for the reference plant in France. At the same time EDF will pursue development of co-operation arrangements and commitments with international entities that are considering deploying the SMR as part of their energy transition or who aspire to join the SMR supply chain.
The Nuward subsidiary will continue to work with its established partners (CEA, TechnicAtome and Naval Group) and new partners brought on board in 2022, Framatome and Tractebel.
