Ballard has announced delivery of its third 250 kWe stationary fuel cell system, to Elektra Birseck in Switzerland. The system was supplied through the joint venture company Alstom Ballard and will be used for field testing at the Elektra Birseck headquarters in Basel. The generator uses Ballard Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) cells.
In other fuel cell news, Chugach Electric Association, under contract to the United States Postal Service, has completed the largest fuel cell based energy system in the country at an Anchorage, Alaska, mail processing centre.
The system, consisting of five units with a combined capacity of 1 MWe, has been developed by International Fuel Cells. The PC25 units, currently the only commercially available fuel cells in the world for stationary power generation, are the main source of power for the mail centre, although any excess power will be distributed through the local grid.
