The annual summit of the group of eight industrialised nations (G8) held in Okinawa, Japan, has closed with a ringing endorsement of renewable energy. Financial and technical assistance is to be provided to encourage developing nations to switch from thermally generated electrical energy to more environmentally benign methods. A small task force comprising public and private sector interests are to draw up specific proposals for discussion at the next G8 annual summit in Italy. The task force will be led by Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, chairman of Royal Dutch / Shell.
