The sale of a 49 per cent stake in the Narva power project in Estonia may be in doubt after the country’s president reportedly suggested that the government think again over the sale. The reports follow an agreement on the purchase of the stake by NRG of the US, see MPS July. However, concerns have been raised that the sale of the plant, which supplies some 90 per cent of the country’s power, may lead to higher electrcity prices and thus reduce the commercial competitiveness of the east European nation.
The news comes in the wake of proposals for the merging of the Estonian and Lithuanian power systems into a single system. The plans have been lodged with the Latvian governmentfor the creation of the Baltic Power Group with separate transmission, distribution, supply and generation arms.
