Pakistan’s second nuclear power plant is currently nearing completion, and it is due to enter trial operation in a few months time, according to a report from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.
The 300 MWe Chashma plant, located 180 km southwest of Islamabad, is being built with Chinese help. It is expected to go critical in April 1999. Commercial production is scheduled to begin the following October.
The Chashma unit is the first China has exported. It contains more Chinese-manufactured components than does China’s indigenous unit at Qinshan.
Chinese personnel are currently preparing plans for the commissioning of the main systems in Pakistan.
