The World Bank and the South African government are supporting an investigation into accusations of bribery in an $8 billion hydro project in Lesotho.

The World Bank, as part of its fight against corruption, has pledged financial support to the Lesotho Justice Department in its investigation of companies charged with bribery in connection with the $8 billion Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

The companies charged include: ABB, Spie Batignolles, Impreglio, Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners, Acres International, and Concor. The companies have either denied involvement in corruption, or declined to comment.

The World Bank supported the project with £150 million of loans. It is conducting its own investigation, and said it might ban any companies found guilty of paying bribes from participating in future Bank-funded projects.
