Two US companies have announced plans to develop a 680 MWe gas-fired plant near Columbus, Georgia. The peaking plant will be built as a joint venture by Sonat Energy Services and Calpine Corp.
The Cataula Power Plant, due to enter service in June 2000, will provide peaking service to the Georgia Integrated Transmission System. Sonat will provide natural gas, while Calpine will be responsible for construction management and operating services.
The Georgia Power Co has committed to a five year contract for 215 MWe from the plant. The remaining output will be sold to other wholesale customers. However, the final size of the plant will depend on firm contacts for capacity.
