The world’s largest hydropower dam is running at half capacity and is making a large loss.

The $3.4 billion, 3300 MWe Ertan dam in China, which started operations last year, is expected to lose over $100 million this year. Losses are expected to be even higher next year.

The problem arose because the Sichuan provincial government is only paying Rmb0.17 cents/kWh rather than the originally budgeted figure of Rmb0.30 cents/kWh, and has only ordered half of the available capacity.
