The findings of a seven-month carbon capture and storage (CCS) feasibility study by Mott MacDonald for PTT Exploration and Production Public Co (PTTEP), the upstream arm of Thailand’s PTT Group, indicate a preferred CCS hub in Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard.
The study was split into two parts; the first covered project framing to identify preliminary operating scenarios and potential business models. The second consisted of an engineering feasibility study for the entire CCS project chain. This included the CCS hub in PTT Group’s seaboard operational sites in Thailand, selected CO2 emitters, onshore transport and storage networks, and offshore transport and injection facilities. PTTEP led the development of the study, which Mott MacDonald delivered as the selected consultant.
A total of six different scenarios were developed and reviewed in terms of their engineering feasibility and approximate total costs. The study outcome indicated that the preferred scenario was a CCS hub in PTT Group’s seaboard operational sites, to enable the gathering of CO2 from emitters in Rayong and Chonburi provinces via onshore pipelines. This emerged as the preferred choice owing to its alignment with PTTEP’s objectives, potential for expansion and comparative economic value.
PTTEP is striving to reach net zero by 2050 to support Thailand’s national net zero target by 2065. The group’s Eastern Thailand CCS Hub Project aims to support long-term decarbonisation of domestic industrial clusters along the east coast, particularly in the Eastern Economic Corridor.
Taking into account the results of the study, PTTEP will now set out the next steps in project implementation.
