The Egyptian electricity and energy ministry has awarded a contract for the Sidi Krier power plant to a consortium of the US companies Bechtel and Intergen, Reuters reports.

Nine groups and companies including ABB and Marubeni had been shortlisted to bid for the build-operate-transfer (BOT) project.

The 650 MW Sidi Krier power plant, Egypt’s first BOT power project, is being seen as a test case as the country extends its privatization programme to infrastructure projects. The consortium which has won the contract will sell electricity to the Egyptian electricity system under a power purchase agreement which has still to be agreed. Detailed negotiations are due to begin soon.
