The Bulgarian National committee of energy and the Nationalna Elektricheska Compania, the state electricity utility, have signed a development agreement with the US company Entergy Corp. that will enable negotiations to begin on a joint project to own and refurbish the Maritza East III power station in Bulgaria.

Talks between the companies are expected to begin within a few weeks. They are due to be completed by the third quarter of this year, with financing for the scheme scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 1999.

The plant is an 840 MW lignite-fired facility burning locally mined lignite. Part of the refurbishment could involve environmental control equipment.
