An innovative district cooling system for Phoenix, Arizona, has broken ground. Northwind Phoenix, an alliance of APS Energy Services and Unicom Thermal Technologies, has started work on the water chiller located near the Bank One Ballpark sports stadium. The system is expected to begin delivering cold water from May next year.
Designed as a service to commercial facilities with a large demand for air conditioning, such as theatres, sports stadia and hotels, the system will produce and store large quantities of ice at off peak periods when costs are low before melting and pumping the chilled water to various locations around the system when required. Costs for developing the system were not disclosed.
