A Taiwan newspaper claims Taipower reached an agreement with the Marshall Islands for storage of low-level nuclear waste. However, a company spokesman denied this.
Taiwan established diplomatic relations with the Marshall Islands in November last year. Taiwan has previously started negotiations with the Marshall Islands, in 1995. These discussions broke down after diplomatic pressure from China.
Taiwan has 63 000 barrels of low-level waste housed in temporary storage facilities at two nuclear power plants. Its permanent store, containing 100 000 barrels, is already full.
Taiwan signed a deal to store waste in a disused mine in North Korea but this deal was subject to protests from South Korea, Japan and the USA.
