Work has begun on Sri Lanka’s first major wind power project. The wind farm, being built at Hambantota in the south will cost $3.7 million. The scheme will have a capacity of 3 MWe. NEG Micon won the contract, funded by the International Development Association and the Global Environmental Facility. The Ceylon Electricity Board hopes to generate 200 MWe from wind. Three more wind plants have been proposed for Kirinda, Palatupana and Bundala.
