The 2400MW Guangzhou pumped storage hydropower plant in Guangzhou Province, China, has officially entered service.

The plant was designed to run in cooperation with the new nuclear power plant in the region in order to make more efficient use of the base-load nuclear output.

The power plant involves eight pump turbines, each with a generating capacity of 300MW. Maximum head at the site is 543m. All electrical and mechanical equipment for the second stage of this two stage project was supplied by Voith Siemens. Work on the project started in 1994.
