Eight international companies are to pool their resources to build a 6000 MW wind farm on the Teheuantec isthmus of Mexico’s Oaxaca state. The eight, Endesa, Gamesa Energia, Iberdrola, Fuerza Eolica, Dewind, ABB Finland and Fuhrlander, will raise US$5 billion to finance the project, then sell the electricity to state electricity company CFE.
The developers are already negotiating with landowners for land rights in connection with installation of the wind turbines.
This is Mexico’s first large scale wind project. It will help reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, and go a long way towards meeting its Kyoto commitments.
