Iranian Energy Minister Habibollah Bitaraf has announced that the country’s installed capacity will reach 36,000 MW this year, capping a 60% increase over the past eight years. With the country’s first private sector power development expected by the end of the year, Bitaraf has said, “one 6,000 MW power plant under a built-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme and one 10,000 MW power plant based on a built-operate-own (BOO) contract are currently under construction by the non-governmental sector.” Bitaraf added that 30% of the country’s high voltage transmission lines have also been installed since 1997.
