A gold mining firm has placed an order with Wärtsilä for the turnkey construction of a gas-fired combined cycle power plant in the Dominican Republic.

Under the €155 million order, Wärtsilä will install 12 of its 50DF engine units as well as waste heat recovery boilers and a single steam turbine. The plant will provide power for the Pueblo Viejo gold mine, which is owned and operated by Barrick Gold of North America, Inc.

The new plant will be based on Wärtsilä’s Flexicycle design, which is said to combine the advantages of a flexible simple cycle plant with the efficiency of a combined cycle plant.
