Dong Energy, E.On and Masdar say that the world’s largest offshore wind farm is on track to be completed by the end of 2012 after generating its first power.
The partners in the 630 MW London Array scheme have started up the first of the project’s 175 wind turbines and say that the milestone is an important development for the offshore wind sector.
“With its 630 MW the London Array project will be the first of the next generation of larger offshore wind farms and we are pleased to have reached first power,” said Benj Sykes of Dong Energy. “Being able to efficiently develop large offshore wind farms and harvest the scale advantages in both construction and operation is an important element in our continuous efforts to bring down costs of energy of offshore wind.”
In a statement the three companies said that 151 of the project’s turbines had been installed at the site in the Thames Estuary off the south east coast of England. The planned second phase of the project would bring its output to 870 MW.
