The Arnheim-based network operator Tennet has contracted Smit Transformatoren to construct and install phase shifters for its interconnection with Germany. The six phase shifters will determine the direction of electricity flow and regulate the transfer of power between the Netherlands and Germany. The project, worth ¤23 million, is due to be completed by the Spring of next year. The 550 t phase shifters are similar in function to transformers. However the coils used by the phase shifters can be arranged to change the direction of power flow while maintaining a constant voltage. The direction of flow can by reversed, step by step. The six units, which will have a total capacity of 2000 MVA at 400 kV, will be installed at Meeden near Groningen.
