The 820 MVA generator step-up transformer for Greece’s Ptolemais unit V lignite fired power plant will be manufactured for Terna SA by GE at its power transformer factory in Gebze, Turkey. Scheduled for installation in 2018, this will be the largest step-up transformer yet deployed in Greece.

Terna is the EPC provider for the project, under a contract to PPC.

Ptolemais V, located at the Komanos mine in Western Macedonia, has a gross capacity of 660 MWe firing pulverised lignite and is also capable of supplying 140 MWt for district heating. The plant will represent a significant improvement in environmental footprint reltive to the existing Ptolemais power plants. It is also expected to reduce the cost of power generation and contribute to Greece’s energy grid reliability and supply security.
