Down in the dumps

21 February 1999

HPS teamed up with Zieglar Power Systems of Minnesota to provide a cogeneration facility in San Diego to burn gas from the decomposition of landfill refuse from the Miramar landfill site. The gas will be collected with a series of connected wells throughout the landfill. After the gas is conditioned and piped into the cogeneration facility, it is burned by four Caterpillar 3516 engines to produce 6.4 MWe.

Meanwhile, Deutz MWM won two orders from the UK for gas engine plants to run on pit gas. The first order was for five engines, each able to deliver 1.3 MWe. The second order was for three engines with a total output of 3.4 MWe.
