ExxonMobil takes Pegasus to the next level

ExxonMobil has launched a “next generation series of gas engine oils to keep up with the latest gas engine developments.” The Mobil PegasusTM 1100 Series has been inspired by major OEMs to cope with severe engine conditions and significantly extend oil drain intervals, the company says.

The new natural gas engine series includes Mobil PegasusTM 1105, for all piston types, and Mobil PegasusTM 1107, said to be designed for “high severity natural gas engines”. Both lubricants have a formulation that helps to extend oil drain intervals by up to 1.5 times when compared to conventional mineral oils, ExxonMobil says.

Following comprehensive industry and bench testing, the new lubricants have been shown to exhibit excellent oxidation and thermal stability, which helps to extend oil life, and also outstanding anti-wear characteristics, including reduced scuffing of liners in highly loaded gas engines. In addition, the new oils controls varnish formation and carbon deposits.

“Gas engine development is pushing the boundaries of engine design to try and increase gas engine power and reduce costs”, says Inken Reuser, industrial marketing advisor at ExxonMobil. “In turn, this has put higher demands on lubrication.”

¦ Preferred oil for Jenbacher engines.

ExxonMobil also reports that it is now a preferred global lubricants supplier for GE’s Jenbacher Type 2, 3 and 9 gas engines. It will help owner-operators of Jenbacher gas engines enhance performance through the use of its Mobil Pegasus family of gas engine oils and co-engineer future oil technologies with GE.

GE’s Jenbacher gas engines are commonly used in CHP plants where oils such as Mobil PegasusTM 705 and Mobil PegasusTM 605 Ultra 40 are applicable.
