First for Scania

21 July 2000

The first rotary UPS system in an airport in Malaysia has been installed, using Scania powered generating sets, by local representative Powermech Engineering. The installation, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), ensures an uninterruptible power supply for the runway lights.

A Scania DSC11 turbocharged diesel with a maximum limited time power rating of 289kW at 1500 rpm powers a 3 phase alternator through an electromagnetic coupling. If mains power fails, batteries take over long enough to allow the generator, which can reach full speed in 10 seconds, to kick in.
