The Korean Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) has signed an agreement with Nexans for the supply of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire. The deal is part of research activities within the framework of the 21st Century Frontier Research and Development Project sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology. The latter is planning to invest ¤85 million on superconductivity related applications in the next decade. The high strength HTS wire is to be manufactured by Nexan's Korean subsidiary. It can carry up to 100 times the current of a conventional copper wire of the same cross section. The HTS wire is expected to be used in various applications such as superconducting cables, transformers, motors and fault current limiters. Nexans has been involved in superconducting projects in Korea since 1997.
