REpower releases its 3.XM1 December 2008
REpower, Germany’s third-largest wind turbine manufacturer, chose the Husum WindEnergy 2008 show to unveil its new onshore wind turbine of the 3 MW class, the 3.XM, which at a nominal rating of 3.3 MW fits neatly into the gap between the company’s three 2 MW units and its 5 MW 5M model.
With the development of the 3.XM, says REpower, it is building on the experience which it has gained from erecting more than 1400 turbines of the MD/MM platform (1.5 or 2 MW output). REpower’s ceo Per Hornung Pedersen; ‘With the 3.XM, we are combining the advantages of the existing REpower products in an ideal manner to close the gap between our bestsellers, the 2 MW turbines, and our powerful offshore turbines’.
It is, he says, a technologically highly advanced wind turbine. During the design stages of the new unit – its rated output of 3.3 MW comes from a 104 m diameter rotor – special attention was paid to reliability, high technical availability and maximum energy yield. During development, the focus was also placed on making noise emissions as low as possible – this was achieved mainly by means of rotor blade development carried out by the company itself. It is claimed to be very easy to service due to the generous design of the system together with optimised accessibility to the components. Care was also taken to ensure that the product could be transported and assembled using the same equipment as for systems from the 2 MW class.
The prototype is to be assembled in a Husum wind farm, Südermarsch, during November. Manufacturing will commence shortly in Bremerhaven, where REpower will initially commence serial production of its offshore turbines 5M and 6M. In the long term, the plan is to build a new factory for the REpower 3.XM in Osterrönfeld, in Schleswig-Holstein.
In addition to the new turbine REpower has also launched an upgraded version of its REguard wind farm management system. New features include three new interfaces that permit a REpower wind farm to be integrated with modern panel systems and SCADA third-party systems. This is particularly important for energy suppliers who already own such systems or who operate power plants across a spectrum of types and manufacturers.
The monitoring, control and documentation of modern windfarm performance must meet very stringent standards. REguard is claimed to offer a comprehensive solution that it says far exceeds what can be expected from conventional SCADA systems and its modular design allows it to be tailored to project-specific requirements. It comes with a range of functions;
•Web reporting – documentation of historic performance data, generation of user-
defined reports, analysis tools
•Remote monitoring – visualisation of current performance data
•Windfarm management – control and regulation of the windfarm based on specific
ambient parameters and presetting
•Advanced data acquisition – integration of external data sources.
The online portal allows operators to capture, view and analyse historical and current performance data as well as meteorological details, while remote monitoring allows for the real-time visualisation of the windfarm performance. The modular management tool includes an array of control options including the ability to meet statutory requirements regarding noise emissions, shading or ice formation and to adjust the electric power parameters of the windfarm so that it can be integrated into the grid as a fully operational power plant.
