3 July 2018

Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) has won an order for a 112 MWe dedicated biomass power plant – said to be the largest such facility to date in Japan – from Kaita Biomass Power Co, Ltd, a special purpose joint venture of Hiroshima Gas Co and Chugoku Electric Power Co. Fuels will include wood pellets and waste forest thinning. The plant, scheduled for commercial operation in March 2021, will employ a circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler. It will also have reheat for enhanced efficiency.

CFB with reheat will also be employed on the 49 MWe biomass plant that SHI is supplying for the Yokkaichi thermal plant site of Chubu Electric. To implement this project, SHI has established a joint venture with Chubu Plant Service Co.

Fuels for the Yokkaichi plant, which has a scheduled commercial operation date of April 2020, will include wood pellets and palm kernel shells.
