Ghana is set to have the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Africa after finalising plans for a 155 MW project.
Mere Power Nzema, a subsidiary of British renewables firm Blue Energy, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Company of Ghana and says that the project will start operating in 2015.
The $350 million Nzema PV plant is the result of efforts by Ghana’s government to boost its renewable energy sector. Blue Energy first revealed plans for the project in 2012 and says that it will consist of over 600 000 solar modules.
Construction is due to start in September 2014 after financial close. Some 450 acres of land for the project in western Ghana has already been acquired.
Ghana has set a target of meeting 10% of its energy needs from renewable resources by 2020.
