The International Energy Agency has released the final version of its 2024 Energy Technology RD&D Budgets data. The RD&D Budgets is a free database, and includes data on energy RD&D public spending up to 2024 based on data from national administrations.

In 2023, the estimated total public energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D) budget for IEA member countries increased by 6% reaching USD 26.5 billion. This was the seventh consecutive year showing an increase.

Public investments in energy RD&D have greatly diversified across countries over the past decades. In the past 20 years, for example, Australia has gone from a budget heavily focused on fossil fuels (54%) to more diverse investments, including hydrogen and fuel cells (35%). Canada has increased its share of energy efficiency RD&D from 27% to 43%; and Japan, although still investing significantly in nuclear RD&D, has reduced its share from 69% to 36%.

Data are available at the Energy Technology RD&D Budgets page.
