The European Investment Bank is supporting a project to improve transmission systems in southern Africa with a loan of $50 million.
The project is to build two overhead transmission lines to supply power from South Africa to Mozambique and Swaziland. The loan will be made to the Mozambique Transmission Company (Motraco).
Motraco is a equal partnership between the national power companies of the three countries involved, Eskom from South Africa, the Swaziland Electricity Board and Electricidade de Mocambique.
The new transmission lines will link the South African grid to Maputo with a single circuit 400 kV line.
The project will provide power to Mozambique’s southern electricity grid and one of the two lines will cross into Swaziland.
