DTEK, Ukraine’s largest power utility, reports that the wave of missile and drone strikes against the country’s energy infrastructure on 13 December was the 12th since March this year and the 9th direct attack on power stations operated by DTEK. It included the specific targeting of the utility’s thermal power plants.

Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, stated: “Earlier this morning, Russia carried out one of its largest attacks ever on Ukraine’s energy system. … Right now, multiple DTEK teams are urgently assessing damage to our power stations and deploying all possible resources to restoring power for the people of Ukraine”.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, DTEK thermal power plants have endured over 200 missile, drone and artillery strikes. Since this 12th attack during which no casualties were reported despite significant equipment damage, DTEK workers have been assessing the extent of the damage and have begun the work of restoring operational capacity.

President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on ‘X’ that Ukrainian forces had shot down 81 of the 93 missiles fired by Russia. Nearly 200 drones were also used in the attack, he said.
