Greek engineering firm Metka has secured the largest contract in its history in an international tender to build a new power plant in Syria.
Together with Ansaldo of Italy, the company is to build a EUR650 million, 700 MW natural gas fired combined cycle power plant in Deir Ali, south of Damascus. The only other participant in the tender was a consortium of Siemens and Aste.
The engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded by Syria’s Ministry of Electricity, and the project is part of wider plans to increase generating capacity in the country by 4500 MW in the next three years.
“This project is the largest EPC project in the history of Metka,” said the company in a statement, adding that it was in line with its strategy to “pursue balanced development of its business between the traditional home market and the international market”.
The project is scheduled to be completed within 36 months. Ansaldo will supply the equipment for the project.
