Solar cell manufacturer Canadian Solar says that it is planning to start shipping solar modules featuring a new, high-efficiency solar cell in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The Ontario-based firm has launched its new ELPS solar cell technology, which can attain 19.5 per cent cell efficiency for monocrystalline cells and up to 18 per cent for polycrystalline cells. Canadian Solar – one of the world’s largest producers of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules – introduced the cells at Intersolar Munich.

“With the new ELPS cell technology we again managed to significantly lower the production cost per watt while at the same time increasing the energy efficiency. In addition, the new solar cells easily integrate with our existing production lines,” said Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and CEO of Canadian Solar.
