The Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) in Mexico expects to complete six new generating plants by end-2001, adding 1770 MW to the country’s generating capacity of 36 659 MW. The six plants are costing $1.1 billion.

Four of these plants are already operating: the 434 MW Chihuahua II plant, the 10 MW Tres Virgenes plant, the 541 MW Rosarito III plant and the 250MW Hermosillo station. The remaining two, Puerto San Carlos III (39 MW) and Rio Bravo (495 MW) are close to completion. A further 17 projects are under construction, schemes requiring a total investment of $4.4 billion and adding a further 7170 MW to the national capacity.
